Andorra, in long form the Principality of Andorra (in Catalan: Andorra and Principate of Andorra), is a state in southern Europe and, according to some definitions, in the west. Bordered by Spain and France (therefore landlocked in the European Union), and located in the Pyrenees, it is mainly made up of high mountains. It is one of the smallest sovereign states in Europe, with an area of ​​468 km2 and an estimated population of 77,000 inhabitants in 2019. Established at 1,023 meters above sea level, Andorra la -Vieille, its capital, is the highest in Europe. The official language is Catalan, the official currency is the euro. The motto of Andorra is "Virtus Unita Fortior", and its flag consists of three vertical stripes blue, yellow and red, the yellow strip being plated with the Andorran crest. The national anthem is El Gran Carlemany.

The principality, whose creation dates back to 780 during the reign of Charlemagne, is governed by a single system, the paréage of 1278 and 1288. This contract of feudal law grants the Andorran throne to two co-princes, the Catalan bishop of Urgell and the Count of Foix (whose rights and duties have passed successively to the King of Basse-Navarre, to the King of France from Henri IV, and finally to the French Head of State). Andorra emerged from its isolation in the twentieth century, during which it took advantage of its natural setting and used a favorable tax system to become a major tourist destination, welcoming nearly three million visitors each year. If the principality is famous today for its ski slopes and low taxes, it is also often considered a tax haven. It has been a member of the United Nations since 1993, of the Council of Europe, but not of the European Union.
